When Richard Stockton College started, the campus was not quite ready, and so we attended college at a local hotel in Atlantic City. The hotel was called the Mayflower. The Mayflower no longer exists. As a matter of fact, prior to the college's use of the Mayflower, I believe the hotel had been condemned. After only a few days, it became quite apparent why. That's said, the hotel had a charm that could not be found in any college, let alone in most hotels in the area.

My most vivid memory was the elevator (only one). It was the old 1920's style cage lift with the lever action controls reminiscent of the Titanic's bridge. Most of the time, it worked and several times people actually got it to stop at the floor level rather than between.

Starting classes at the Mayflower was an excellent introduction to the uniqueness that was and continues to be Richard Stockton College. The first graduates were in 1972. I graduated in 1973, only 2 years after Stockton opened its doors. The students that started in the Mayflower named Lake Fred; created the school symbol/logo; mascot and a number of lasting impressions that are present even yet.

I am proud to have graduated from Stockton and thrilled to have been one of its first students.

Some more history of Stockton. Looks like they missed the Mayflower period.

Stockton Srate College Trivia

Trivia: The logo for Richard Stockton College is shown above on the left. When established Stockton was considered an environmental school. The logo respresent "people supporting the environment"

Trivia: Lake Fred was originally a cranberry bog which was mostly dry until harvest time. The college permanently blocked the release and Lake Fred was born. Urban (rural) legend has it that the owner of the bog was Fred something or other and hence the name.

Trivia: Lake Pam (sister lake to Fred) was a bit more secluded and it is said that clothing was quite optional long ago. Sorry, I have no first hand recollection of the activities at Lake Pam.

Trivia: Richard Stockton College first classes were held in the Mayflower Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey

Trivia: Prior to the current dorms, a student initiated class developed a plan to create dorms based on geodesic dome technology. In fact, an eighteen foot diameter model was constructed in a parking area where the Art & Sciences building now stands.

Trivia: Original grading system for Stockton was Pass, Fail and No credit. That was the only grading. Several years passed before traditional grading was offered. Now the pass/no credit system is optional and limited. It was a much different atomsphere when grades didn't matter. Of course, graduate schools were not as enamored with the system as the students.

If you are an early Stockton graduate and have some trivia you would like to add, just email it to me
