Storing high quality images sucks up a large amount of disk space. To reduce this, so you can store more images, you can use a image optimizer. There are optimizers for both .gif and .jpg formats. (Probably others to, but these 2 formats are what I use)
The JPEG optimizer I like is The JPEG Wizard by Pegasus
The GIF optimizer I like is Trout's GIF Optimizer
To demonstrate the benefits of image optimization, below are 4 images of the same original. Note the quality and download speed of each.
